First Look At Dwayne Johnson’s New Movie In Red Notice Set Photos

Dwayne Johnson shares first look photos from the set of his upcoming thriller Red Notice. Originally set to be produced by Universal, the newest Johnson star vehicle was surprisingly picked up last July by Netflix, at which time Ryan Reynolds was also announced to be joining the movie’s cast. Shooting on the film began in January, as Johnson himself revealed, with no release date yet announced (after Universal originally set the film for a Fall 2020 release).

Joining Johnson and Reynolds in Red Notice is third movie superstar Gal Gadot, who of course is also set to head up the superhero sequel Wonder Woman 1984 later this year. Directed by Johnson’s frequent collaborator Rawson Marshall Thurber, Red Notice stars Gadot as “the world’s greatest art thief,” who is being tracked by INTERPOL agent Johnson – who is described as “the world’s greatest tracker.” Reynolds also figures into the three-way mix as “the world’s greatest con-man.”

On his Instagram, star Johnson shared a few set photos from Red Notice, giving fans their first very small glimpse of the upcoming action-comedy thriller. In the post, Johnson also paid tribute to his friend Geoff Haley, who is serving as a camera operator on the film after working with Johnson many times before (and apparently telling him a lot of very dirty jokes). As Johnson mentions in his Instagram post, after finishing Red Notice he will next be re-teaming with Haley to work on the DC movie Black Adam, which is expected to set up a later pairing between Johnson’s titular Black Adam and Zachary Levi’s Shazam. In an earlier Instagram posting, Johnson promised his Black Adam will change the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe (whatever that means).

With a cast featuring Johnson, Reynolds and Gadot, Red Notice certainly boasts plenty of star power, a big plus for Netflix as they sell the movie (they had decent success selling the previous Reynolds action vehicle 6 Underground, which also touted the presence of Michael Bay as director). Obviously, landing a full-on Johnson action film is a big deal for the streamer as they continue their efforts to compete with the major studios in releasing audience-friendly movies that appeal to overseas viewers. Thus far, there’s been little to indicate that Red Notice will break any formulas or introduce any new wrinkles to the standard Johnson approach, beyond giving him a pair of very well-known co-stars who have headed up their own action films in the past. But certainly Netflix isn’t looking for anything too game-changing with this particular project, and are instead banking on Johnson, Reynolds and company delivering a crowd-pleasing combination of action and laughs along the lines of the stars’ previous films.
